How to store and protect your automotive books

Most of what damages a collectible book is avoidable. Get the basics right and your books will look, and value, the same in twenty years.
Protect the dust jacket
On modern books the jacket carries much of the value. A clear archival cover (mylar/polyester) protects it from tears and handling without hiding it.
Keep light, heat and humidity in check
Direct sunlight fades spines fast. Aim for stable, moderate humidity (too dry cracks bindings, too damp invites foxing and mould) and avoid heat sources.
Store them upright
Shelve books vertically and snugly, not leaning, not overpacked. Very large or heavy volumes are better laid flat to protect the spine.
Handle with care
Clean, dry hands; no food or drink nearby. Open large books on a supported surface so the spine isn't stressed.
Keep the extras together
Slipcases, inserts and original receipts add value, store them with the book, not loose in a drawer.
